Collection of Information
When you create an account, we ask for your contact information, which includes your name and phone number. We use your name so that others can recognize you when you wish to connect with other users in the app.Phone numbers are likewise used to establish connections, but also for login. Other users can only see your name and number when you send a request. We request access to your contacts in order to make it easier for you to invite other users to the app, so that you do not have to manually enter their phone numbers. This access is optional, and you can choose to decline it without it affecting your use of the app.We also ask for access to your microphone, which is used when you record stories in the app. The microphone is only activated when you turn it on yourself in the app.In addition, we ask for access to your camera so that you can make your stories more personal with your own images. Storytellers can add images to their stories, and listeners can take a profile picture. The camera is only used when you choose to take a picture in the app. In order to use Storybirds, it is necessary for you to grant us permission for these features (except for access to contacts). If you contact us directly, we may receive additional information about you, such as your name, email address, phone number, the contents of the message and/or attachments you may send us, and any other information you choose to provide.

How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect in various ways to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain our website and app

  • Improve, personalize, and expand our website and app

  • Understand and analyze how you use our website and app

  • Develop new products, services, and features

  • Communicate with you, either directly or through one of our partners, including for customer service, to provide you with updates and other information regarding the website and our app, as well as for marketing and promotional purposes

  • Send you emails and/or text messages with notifications

  • Detect and prevent fraud

Use of SMS Feature and Permissions
Our app uses SMS in two contexts:

  • Security codes (OTP): When registering or logging in, we send a one-time code (OTP) via SMS to verify the user’s phone number. The app may automatically suggest or insert this code using a secure SMS service (e.g., the Android SMS Retriever API), so the user does not have to enter it manually. The code is used solely for authentication. We do not collect the contents of the SMS, and the code is not stored.

  • Invitations to other users: The app offers the user the option to invite others to use the app via SMS. When the user chooses to send an invitation, an SMS with pre-filled text is opened. The message is not sent automatically – the user can edit, send, or delete it through their device’s standard messaging app.

Permissions and Data Processing

  • The app requests access to SMS only in connection with the automatic reading of one-time codes (OTPs).

  • The app does not read other SMS messages and does not share or store any SMS data.

  • The SMS feature is never used for marketing or third-party purposes.

User Control

  • The user can choose whether the invitation is sent via SMS.

  • The user can refuse permission for automatic SMS reading at any time.

  • The SMS feature can be disabled via the device’s settings.
